Florida Highwaymen Paintings By Hair, Newton, Butler Will Please Collectors

Robert Butler Highwaymen PaintingA beautiful grouping of Florida Highwaymen Paintings by Al Hair, Sam Newton, Harold Newton, James Gibson, Robert Butler, Al Black and others will sell in Manor Auctions October 9th auction. Florida Highwaymen art collectors will truly enjoy the variety of pieces being offered in the Fine Art session of the October 9th auction. The Florida Highwaymen artists have defined the Florida landscape for the past 50 years with their Florida landscape and seascape paintings. Being headquartered in Florida, Manor Auctions always seeks to acquire and offer original Florida art, such as the Florida Highwaymen.

It was the early 1950's when the prominent S. Florida artist Albert Backus took an unknown African-American artist by the name of Al hair under his arm to teach him how to create stunning Florida landscape art. Hair saw his relationship to Backus and Florida Art as an opportunity to earn a living.

Hair went on to recruit and teach 25 friends in the style of painting learned from Backus. This group of 25 men and 1 woman came to be known as the original 26 Florida Highwaymen artist. With their start in a Ft. Pierce Florida garage, the group began painting at a feverish pace. The pieces created were then sold throughout South Florida, mostly out of car trunks. The Highwaymen and their commissioned sales reps would regularly be seen along roadsides "Highwaymen") and going door to door of local businesses and professional offices, such as car dealerships, motels, real estate brokers and the like. The early paintings cost $20 - 30 each and came to be the primary income for many of the original 26 Highwaymen.

The Highwaymen artists disbanded in the early 1980's and many went on to other careers, until the mid-90's when interest in their story and paintings soared. Then in 2004 the original 26 Florida Highwaymen were inducted in to the Florida Artist Hall of Fame. To this day, many books have been written on the Highwaymen. Their intriguing story is an inspiration.

The original 26 Florida Highwaymen are:

Curtis Arnett, Hezekiah Baker, Al Black, Ellis Buckner, George Buckner, Robert Butler, Mary Ann Carroll, Johnny Daniels, Willie Daniels, Rodney Demps, James Gibson, Alfred Hair, Issac Knight, Robert L. Lewis, John Maynor, Roy McLendon, Alfonso Moran, Harold Newton, Lemuel Newton, Sam Newton, Livingston Roberts, Willie Reagan, Cornell Smith, Charles Walker, Sylvester M. Wells and Charles Wheeler
