Art Auction Of Prominent New York Graffiti Artist John "Crash" Matos

Share |

Art Auction Of Prominent New York Graffiti Artist John "Crash" Matos. Manor Auctions is offering nearly 30 works of John "Crash" Matos to include originals and limited prints. The art auction of John Matos (American, b.1961) works takes place on December 14th during the first session of Manor's December 2013 Art, Jewelry, Timepiece & Collectible Auction.

Matos got his start at the age of 13 as a New York graffiti. As a graffiti artist, Matos did full murals and complete paintings, instead of the quick and simple "tagging" technique John-Matos-Campbell-Soup-Watercolor-Paintingwhich was most commonly known as and associated with graffito. It was these larger impressive murals and paintings on old buildings and trains throughout New York which first brought attention to Matos and his art. In 1980, Crash curated the now iconic exhibition:"Graffiti Art Success for America" at Fashion MODA, launching the graffiti movement that has remained very active through today. By the 1980s Matos had exhibits across the United States and abroad.

In 1996, Crash painted an Eric Clapton Signature Stratocaster and gave it to the artist as a gift. Clapton went on to use the guitar Crash had specially made for him through his 2001 tour and later appeared with another. Over the years, Crash has created 5 guitars for Clapton, John-Matos-Silver-Surfer-Watercolorthough only three of them have made public appearances. These specially designed on-of-a-kind guitars have come to be affectionately known as "Crashocasters". One of Clapton's "Crashocasters" (nicknamed by Eric's former guitar tech, Lee Dickson) auctioned for $321,100 (USD) by the name of "Crash-3" and was used extensively during the first Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2004.

The later, and more complete work with recto and verso views, is illustrated in the widely distributed Abrams Dali book edited by Max Gerard with text translated by Dali friend and collector Eleanor Morse, whose collection became the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. The sketch contains four recognizable Dali devices: a figure with drawers (where one hides personal details and information), a head with sprouting branches, orthogonal lines representing the Plain of Ampurdam in Catalonia and a "shot hip". Dali always liked prominent hip bones or, at least, a stance that caused one hip to stick out to the side. Size: 23.75 x 18.25" Est. $30,000 - 40,000

About Salvador Dalí:

Dalí was a skilled draftsman, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. His painterly skills are often attributed to the influence of Renaissance masters. His best-known work, The Persistence of Memory, was completed in August 1931. Dalí's expansive artistic repertoire included film, sculpture, and photography, in collaboration with a range of artists in a variety of media.

Dalí attributed his "love of everything that is gilded and excessive, my passion for luxury and my love of oriental clothes" to an "Arab lineage", claiming that his ancestors were descended from the Moors.

Dalí was highly imaginative, and also enjoyed indulging in unusual and grandiose behavior. His eccentric manner and attention-grabbing public actions sometimes drew more attention than his artwork, to the dismay of those who held his work in high esteem, and to the irritation of his critics.
