ALFRED R MITCHELL OIL ON BOARD - LAKE NEAR SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA
Alfred Mitchell (American, 1888 – 1972) Alfred Mitchell was born in York, Pennsylvania. Mitchell first headed west with dreams of being a gold prospector. After deciding he could not make it as a prospector during the California Gold Rush, he settled in San Diego in 1908 and began to paint. Mitchell painted mostly landscapes and seascapes of the San Diego area. Because Mitchell painted in and around San Diego, his works provide a great resource as to how San Diego once was and how the area evolved through development.
Mitchell’s schooling included the San Diego Academy of Art (under Maurice Braun, founder) and later the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Mitchell was an Impressionism and Post-Impressionism painter. While living and painting in the Sand Diego area, Mitchell was very active in the local art community, establishing many of the local art organization. He was considered to have a great influence on the Southern California art community.
