Lot 51154 SALVADOR DALI FIGURE W/ DRAWERS BALLPOINT ARCHES Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989). Untitled standing figure with drawers; blue ballpoint pen on Arches buff paper, framed, watermark lower right Arches France, signed and dated lower right in charcoal "Dali 1961". Accompanied by Authenticity Report from Bernard Ewell, ASA; internationally recognized authority on the art of Salvador Dali. This sketch bears a direct relationship to a drawing Salvador Dali created for American Weekly magazine. The later, and more complete work with recto and verso views, is illustrated in the widely distributed Abrams Dali book edited by Max Gerard with text translated by Dali friend and collector Eleanor Morse, whose collection became the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. The sketch contains four recognizable Dali devices: a figure with drawers (where one hides personal details and information), a head with sprouting branches, orthogonal lines representing the Plain of Ampurdam in Catalonia and a "shot hip". Dali always liked prominent hip bones or, at least, a stance that caused one hip to stick out to the side. Size: 23.75 x 18.25" Est. $30,000 - 40,000
Everyone is welcome to participate in the auction. The auction is open to Floor, Absentee, Telephone and Online bidding (Lot 51152 / Lot 51154). Visit the December 2013 Fine Art, Jewelry & Collectible Auction Page for more information. Contact the gallery with any questions: 850-523-3787
About Salvador Dalí:
Dalí was a skilled draftsman, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. His painterly skills are often attributed to the influence of Renaissance masters. His best-known work, The Persistence of Memory, was completed in August 1931. Dalí's expansive artistic repertoire included film, sculpture, and photography, in collaboration with a range of artists in a variety of media.
Dalí attributed his "love of everything that is gilded and excessive, my passion for luxury and my love of oriental clothes" to an "Arab lineage", claiming that his ancestors were descended from the Moors.
Dalí was highly imaginative, and also enjoyed indulging in unusual and grandiose behavior. His eccentric manner and attention-grabbing public actions sometimes drew more attention than his artwork, to the dismay of those who held his work in high esteem, and to the irritation of his critics.
